Congaree National Park Job Openings

Visited this free park during the rainy off season, and the weather only added to the beauty of the scenery! Plus, there were absolutely no bugs as we explored the boardwalk trail. We also went for a kayaking trip down Cedar Creek in the rain (it was cold, not going to lie, but absolutely worth it to see what makes the park such a unique and interesting place as the creek began to swell and trails started to flood). We were able to camp no problem because the campground is at slightly higher elevation on the bluffs. No idea why anyone has anything negative to say about this park - it was gorgeous, peaceful, secluded, great example of the biodiversity of this ecosystem, litter-free, and well preserved. Definitely want to return in the spring or summed when less of the trails aren flooded and when the entire park museum is open (closed because of covid or renovations, I couldn't tell). Call ahead to check conditions if you're worried about rain. This is a beautiful and important example of our public lands, don't overlook it because it doesn't share the exact characteristics of the other 61!

Congaree National Park is the largest old growth bottomland hardwood forest in the southeastern United States. A bottomland hardwood forest is a type of deciduous hardwood forest found in broad lowland floodplains along large lakes and rivers in the United States. It is occasionally referred to as an overflow swamp because it floods in the wet seasons. Although the trees cannot survive continuous flooding, they develop traits to survive seasonal submergence in water. Historically found along the Mississipi River and throughout the Gulf Coast, foresting and farming has greatly reduced the acreage of land covered by these forests. Congaree River, Wateree River and Cedar Creek all flow through portions of the park.
