Carlos Osorio/Associated Press The Pittsburgh Pirates have hired Ben Cherington to replace Neal Huntington as the general manager, according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Cherington had served as the Toronto Blue Jays ' vice president of baseball operations since September 2016. In October, Andy Martino of reported Cherington was not expected to be included in the New York Mets ' GM search because he was "happy" in Toronto and "not eager to leave. " However, Cherington emerged as the Pirates' top target on Thursday, per Mackey. The 45-year-old executive was reportedly offered the job on Thursday, and after sleeping on it, he accepted it on Friday. This marks just the latest stop in the big leagues for Cherington. He got his start as an advanced scout for the Cleveland Indians in 1998, and he joined the Boston Red Sox in 1999. He served as the team's director of international scouting and director of player development before being named the general manager in October 2011.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have filled their vacant general manager position by hiring Ben Cherington, the team announced Monday. The Pirates have also announced that assistant general manager Kyle Stark has been relieved of his duties. As for Cherington, the biggest item to stand out on his resume is winning the 2013 World Series as general manager of the Red Sox. Cherington, 45, was hired by the Red Sox by then-GM Dan Duquette and served as a baseball operations assistant and director of player development, among other jobs, from 1999-2005. After Theo Epstein returned from a hiatus to take over as club president, Cherington was named as vice president of player personnel and served in that role until the end of the 2011 season. After Epstein departed for the Cubs, Cherington took over as the GM of the Red Sox. The first season with manager Bobby Valentine was a disaster -- though reports indicated Valentine wasn't Cherington's choice, but instead that of ownership. After the last-place finish in 2012, Cherington added a bevy of veterans on short deals, such as Shane Victorino, Koji Uehara, Stephen Drew, Mike Napoli and David Ross.

The Pirates will officially introduce Cherington as their new general manager at a Monday afternoon press conference in Pittsburgh. He replaces Neal Huntington, who was fired Oct. 28 following 12 years on the job. After sufficiently impressing his new bosses, the hard part of the job is ahead for Cherington because the Pirates' baseball operations department needs a lot of work from top to bottom. The Pirates went 69-93 this year and finished last in the National League Central for the first time since 2010. The second half of the season was a disaster as the Pirates had a 25-48 record following the All-Star break amid clubhouse turmoil and the arrest and jailing of All-Star closer Felipe Vazquez on child sex charges.

Travis Williams was brought on as team president last month when Frank Coonelly stepped away after 12 years. One of Cherington's first jobs will be finding a manager. The Pirates fired Clint Hurdle on the final day of the regular season and put the search of his replacement on pause until a new general manager was brought in. ___ More AP MLB: and Read the original article on Associated Press. For his work, Cherington was recognized as Sporting News' Executive of the Year; Huntington finished second that year after leading the Pirates back to the postseason for the first time in 20 years. The rest of Cherington's tenure in Boston was marked by disappointment at the Major League level and tremendous progress in the Minors. The Red Sox finished in last place in 2014 and '15, but they acquired, developed and built the core of their 2018 World Series championship team -- players like Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Rafael Devers and Eduardo Rodriguez. That club also benefitted from Dave Dombrowski's decision to deal prospects, most of whom were acquired under Cherington, for difference-making veterans like Chris Sale and Craig Kimbrel. But Boston demanded instant and consistent success at Fenway Park, so the Red Sox hired Dombroski to run their baseball operations department on Aug. 18, 2015, and Cherington resigned the same day. Cherington reportedly had informal conversations about joining the Pirates' front office that winter but instead took a job with Columbia University's Sports Management faculty and taught a class on leadership in the spring of 2016.
